About the state

Osun State, created on August 27, 1991, is steeped in rich history, originating from various Western Yoruba states. The region was part of the Oyo Empire and witnessed significant events like the Kiriji War from 1877 to 1893. Following colonial rule, it became part of the British Southern Nigeria Protectorate and later merged into Nigeria in 1914. After gaining independence in 1960, the area transitioned through several administrative changes, ultimately becoming Osun State in 1976 when parts of the old Oyo State were restructured. Named after the revered River Osun, the state is a vibrant hub of Yoruba culture and heritage.
